Will I receive a 1099 from Rover?

Rover is not a tax advisor and cannot provide advice about taxes, income reporting, or unemployment.

There are a number of factors that determine whether you’ll receive a 1099 tax form, such as your location, how you receive payments, and the amount of payments Rover processed on your behalf.

Check

If you’ve withdrawn $600 or more via check over the course of a calendar year, Rover will send you a 1099-NEC tax form to the address listed on your W-9 by January 31. Additionally, an electronic copy will be emailed via tax1099.com by January 31.

PayPal

If you receive payments via PayPal, then you won’t receive tax documentation from Rover. Since PayPal distributes these funds to you, it is responsible for handling your tax documentation in accordance with its own tax reporting practices.

Direct transfer

If you’ve added your bank account information to your Rover account to receive direct transfers, you must meet both of the following criteria in a calendar year to receive a 1099-K:

  • Greater than $20,000 in gross payments from pet owners
  • Greater than 200 pet care services transactions

The following states have different requirements to receive a 1099-K:

Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Vermont and Virginia Must have at least $600 in gross earnings
Illinois Must have at least $1,000 in gross earnings and have at least 4 pet care service transactions
Missouri Must have at least $1,200 in gross earnings
New Jersey Must have at least $1,000 in gross earnings

What’s included in gross payments?

Gross payments reflect the entire amount of payments processed on Rover on your behalf. This includes Rover’s service fees and is before any applicable refunds.  This means that reported gross payments will be higher than what you actually received in your bank account.

If you don’t meet the requirements to receive a 1099 from Rover

The fact that your payments on Rover do not reach the reporting threshold in a tax year does not relieve you of your obligation to report and pay taxes for income received through the Rover platform. We encourage you to consult with a tax advisor to better understand your requirements.
