Important update: Earlier this year, the IRS announced that the new threshold for receiving a 1099-K would be $600. As of November 21, 2023, the IRS announced that it would delay this change and revert back to the original 1099-K threshold of more than $20,000 in processed payments and 200 transactions. We're aware that this impacts our sitter community and who will be eligible to receive a 1099-K for the 2023 year. The information below reflects the most up-to-date eligibility requirements. |
Note: This article is for any U.S. sitter who received payments through Stripe. For questions about payments received via PayPal or check, visit this article.

What is a form 1099-K?
A 1099-K is an information report that marketplaces, such as Rover, must file each year with the IRS and various state tax authorities if the payments we process for you exceed $20,000 and 200 transactions.
How do I know if I will receive a form 1099-K?
You’ll receive a Form 1099-K if you received more than $20,000 of gross payments and 200 transactions for services booked on Rover in a year and you received your payments for those services via Stripe.
The following states have different requirements to receive a 1099-K:
Washington D.C., Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Vermont, and Virginia | Must have at least $600 in gross earnings |
North Carolina | Must have over $600 in gross earnings |
Arkansas | Must have at least $2500 in gross earnings |
Illinois | Must have over $1,000 and at least 4 transactions |
New Jersey | Must have at least $1,000 in gross earnings |
Note: The information above reflects our understanding of state thresholds as of right now, but these are subject to change as various states respond to the IRS delay of the new threshold change.
Where can I find my 1099-K summary?
If you've met the eligibility threshold to receive a Form 1099-K, you can find a 1099-K summary under the Documents section of the Payment History tab. This summary provides you with a reconciliation of the information on Form 1099-K and your net earnings through Rover. It is not a replacement for Form 1099-K or any of your own tax documentation, but we hope it's a helpful resource when filing your taxes.

The number on the 1099-K doesn't match my earnings. Why?
Reportable gross payments include Rover’s service fees and any sales tax collected. Keep in mind that this is before any refunds or discounts. This means the amount reported on your 1099-K will be higher than the earnings you received in your bank account, but these additional amounts are not taxable to you.
The IRS is aware that this form does not report net income. You should continue to report and pay tax on only your earnings and keep records that support the amounts declared on your tax return.
What is being reported on my 1099-K?
We are required by the IRS to report gross payments for bookings we have processed on your behalf. Reportable gross payments include your Rover service fees and any sales tax collected. This is before any refunds or discounts, which means the amount reported on your 1099-K will be higher than the earnings you received in your bank account. These additional amounts are not taxable to you.
We know taxes can be confusing to navigate, so we’ve partnered with a trusted tax partner on this comprehensive PDF guide made just for sitters on Rover. It provides a breakdown of the information and materials you’ll need to file taxes for your earnings through Rover.

How do I know if my tax info is correct for my 1099-K?
Rover will use the name, social security number, address, and email address we have on file for you when you set up to receive payments via Stripe. If any of this information has changed (like your legal name), you can update it from the Payments section of your dashboard. Here’s how:
- From the Rover app, tap More > Payments. If you're on a computer, open your dashboard.
- Tap Manage Payout Methods
- Select Update payment details and click the pencil icon below the Personal Details section.
- Hit Submit.
To ensure we reflect these updates on your 1099-K for the year, all updates to your tax information must be received before December 16th.
